10-Point Checklist for On-Site Steel Inspection
1. Do the Documents Match? (PO vs. Delivery Note) The first thing to check is the "Delivery Note" compared to your "Purchase Order" (PO). Check that the store name, product list, quantity, and price match. If they don't, notify the driver immediately.
2. Is the number of bundles/bars correct as per the bill? Count the number of steel bars delivered (both bundles and individual pieces) to ensure they match the number specified on the delivery note. If the item arrives in a large bundle, check the "tag" to ensure the correct number of bars is specified.
3. Is the steel type correct? (RB vs. DB vs. section steel) If you order round steel bars (RB), you must get RB; if you order ribbed steel bars (DB), you must get DB; if you order square steel bars, you must get square steel bars. Don't rely solely on appearance; check the symbols on the steel.
4. Is the steel size correct? (Carry a tape measure/Vernier caliper.) This is the most common mistake.
Rebar: Use a tape measure to measure the "length" (usually 10 or 12 meters) and a Vernier caliper to measure the "diameter" (e.g., 12 mm or 16 mm).
- Structural steel: Measure the width x length and "thickness" of the steel.
5. Is the "TIS" symbol clear? All structural steel bars must have a clear, legible "TIS" stamp. Check that the TIS symbol matches the steel type (e.g., TIS 24-2559 for ribbed steel bars).
6. Is the grade correct? The ribbed steel (DB) will be marked with a grade, such as SD40 or SD50. This grade must match the one specified in the construction drawings. Do not substitute a lower grade.
7. Is the steel in good condition? (Rust vs. Warp)
- Rust: Surface rust is normal for steel and does not affect its strength. However, it must not be "pitting rust" that has penetrated deep into the steel.
- Bending: The steel must be straight, not bent or deformed to the point of being unsightly.
8. Check the steel tag. The tag (paper or plastic tag attached to the steel bundle) will contain important information such as the manufacturer's name, size, grade, and production lot number. Check to make sure it matches what you ordered.
9. Weight (If ordering by weight): If you order steel sold by the kilo (e.g., structural steel), upon arrival, a random "weighing" or, if possible, weighing the entire truck (before and after unloading) should be performed to verify the correct net weight.
10. Is the storage area suitable? Before letting the driver unload the goods, check that your storage area is ready. "Do not stack steel directly on the ground" or in damp areas. A wooden sleeper or concrete block foundation should be used to prevent moisture and rust.
